Landcom has announced a national competition to find Australia’s most creative environmental artists to develop an artwork which will be the centerpiece for an important water based park in The Ponds.
The Water Cultures public art will act as a showcase for the area’s environmental work, responding to the Lake, its engineering and water management functions as well as its recreational role in the new park.
Carmen Osborne, Development Director from Landcom comments, “Public art has played an integral role in shaping and defining The Ponds. Artists have the capacity to create intriguing work which enlivens community environments. The community has strongly embraced the public art we already have in The Ponds.”
“This is the first time Landcom has launched a national art competition at The Ponds. The company expects to attract a high-calibre of special artistic talent from the environmental art world. The Ponds is an excellent example of how art has been integrated into the community to support and reflect its water management and sustainability practices.”
Landcom will select and remunerate up to six artists to develop concepts for the Water Cultures artwork that uses sculptural or installed elements, customised engineering and design elements, sustainable technologies and surface treatments to animate the lake and its foreshores. The winning concept will be fabricated and installed as part of the landscape development.
“The notion of the ‘culture of water’ is the embracing theme for this public art project. Artists are invited to provide innovative ways to look at the environment and creative ways of managing such issues,” added Ms Osborne.
The Water Cultures artwork project will be one of a suite of public art projects that form part of The Lake Public Art Strategy. It is a component of the broader The Ponds Public Art Plan developed in 2007 and currently undergoing implementation.
Public artwork already on display at The Ponds includes Float, Water Lines, Digital Litter, Creek Line, Aboriginal artwork and Owl Seating.
Expressions of interest are sort from experienced public artists who would like to be short-listed for this project. The closing date is 25 October for expressions of interest.
