Penrith resident Bronwyn Berman has won a national art competition to develop an artwork called Water Cultures which will become the focal point for a water based park in The Ponds.
Ms Berman was selected from 32 environmental artists from across Australia to win the competition. A shortlist of seven were chosen from the entries and invited to develop concepts for Water Cultures with Ms Berman’s design ultimately winning.
Carmen Osborne, Development Director from Landcom comments, “Public art is a significant part of the design of The Ponds and its public open spaces. Artists have the capacity to create work that captivates the community imagination and enlivens public places.”
“The Selection Panel, which included representatives from Landcom, Blacktown Council, Guppy and Associates and residents of The Ponds, felt that Ms Berman’s sculpture best expressed the culture of water and effectively embraces its lake location. Her piece interacts beautifully with the surface of the water and has strong vertical reed like elements which are eight metres tall. Ms Berman’s ability to demonstrate creativity combined with a sustainability message was a major factor in awarding her the commission.”
Ms Berman adds, “The theme of my work is the living cycle of water. The polished stainless steel sculpture is centred around an archetypal spiral pattern. As part of the design elegant reed forms rise from the lake surface and terminate in a furled leaf motif, typical of aquatic plants. Gaseous forms of clouds are expressed in the spiral that gathers from the sky, drawing downwards and culminating in a trickling of water that plays on the lake surface.”
“An aeration system will also be installed on the lake bed to produce an inner motion of water to create currents and a gentle trail of bubbles at the base of the sculpture.”
Water Cultures will be installed in the lake later this year.
Public artwork already installed at The Ponds includes Float, Water Lines, Digital Litter, Creek Lines Aboriginal artwork, Owl Seating and a gigantic two hundred metre long art wall that captures urban views from Western Sydney’s visual artists.
