The Ponds was given an additional splash of colour this week with the unveiling of a gigantic two hundred metre long art wall that captures urban views from Western Sydney’s visual artists.
Artists were each given ten panels to depict an edgy commentary on the suburban environment. Landcom, Guppy and Associates and Blacktown Arts Centre participated in the selection of the artists.
Carmen Osborne, Development Director from Landcom comments, “The exceptional art wall has given visual artists from the local area an opportunity to create large works that explore themes around urban life. Each of the works is distinctive and offers a completely unique insight on urban life. The stencil art itself has an immediacy that creates a bold and undeniable statement.”
“The Ponds has gained a reputation as one of the most visually interesting places in Blacktown. Public art works are deliberately located at key points in the landscape adding remarkable features to this active new suburb.”
Kellyville based artist Jan Cleveringa’s work ‘Poetry in the Suburbs’ uses everyday icons such as the sofa and circular saw to ask questions about domesticity, work, cultural diversity and local heritage.
Well known cultural figures including Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz are evocatively portrayed by James Freiberg.
An energetic collective of six young artists based in Fairfield called Popperbox worked on their wall creation ‘When Planets Collide’ while listening to music, to create an intriguing series of magical images exploring the idea that we all create our own universe.
Super mice storm through Blacktown landscapes on Natalie Zajaz’s creative narrative, while Johan Neve has articulated a confronting critique of the temporary nature of life and urban experience.
The Ponds is a 320 hectare master-planned community which is being developed by Landcom and Australand. It will comprise over 3,000 homes when complete.
