WANNABE SAILORS TO TUSSLE IN LAND BOAT RACES

Registrations have opened for the land boat race events, primed to be a major crowd magnet at this year’s Family Fun Day to be hosted at The Ponds on Sunday 14 March starting at 3pm.

Hundreds of adults and children are expected to tussle in their colourful, hand-made land boat creations in the open space in front of The Ponds Sales & Display Centre on Riverbank Drive, to claim the coveted cash and incentive prizes worth several thousand dollars.

The winning three person crew in the open boat race will receive one thousand two hundred dollars in prize money to be donated to a club or charity of their choice plus three yearly Gold memberships to Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope. A further four $100 cash prizes are on offer for the most imaginatively presented boats and crews in the 100 metre race.

Two land boat races will also be held for primary school children. Children aged 5 to 8 years will contest the first category over 60 metres and those aged 9 to 12 years the second 80 metre race. First, second and third place getters will strive for part of the $900 prize pool. An additional $600 dollar prize pool is also up for grabs for the six most imaginative land boats in each category, comprising two crew members per boat.

“The land boat races will add a lively dimension to this year’s Family Fun Day, engendering much teamwork and community spirit amongst the competitors both young and old. This year’s event will carry a water theme to reinforce one of the key features at The Ponds compared to neighbouring residential developments,” said Kerry Robinson from Landcom.

John Palmer Public School will host a workshop for participants in the land boat races on Thursday 18 February at 3.30pm in the main school hall. Scissors, paints, decorations, cardboard, newspaper and tape will be supplied to assist creative minds.

To register for the land boat races or for further information about the workshop phone The Ponds, Community Liaison Officer, Tuula Schaffer on 9629 1212 or 0412 620 115. The closing date for registrations is Monday 1 March, 2010.

The Ponds is a 320 hectare master-planned community which is being developed by Landcom and Australand. It will comprise over 3,000 homes when complete.
