Landcom has started on The Ponds $7 million eastern playing fields project which is primed to become the flagship sports facility in the North West situated in The Ponds.
The project will comprise two high-tech playing fields, four tennis courts, four netball courts and playgrounds. Additional features include two ponds, training standard lighting, extensive landscaping and a car park accommodating 165 cars.
“The Ponds is the fastest growing suburb in New South Wales. A major attraction is the high quality recreational facilities that are being incorporated into the masterplanned community including the playing fields project. Such sports facilities are important assets for the residents of The Ponds and nearby suburbs,” said Kerry Robinson, General Manager - Development for Landcom.
“This state-of-the-art sports facility will become an integral part of the community for the families that already live in the area and provide a home venue for local sporting associations.”
“The many kilometres of cycle and walking paths throughout The Ponds will link to the new facility making it safe and easy for the community to use,” he added.
The circular playing fields area of the works will accommodate a variety of winter sports (soccer, AFL, rugby and league), cricket (synthetic turf cricket pitch) and local athletics activities. There are also purpose built tennis courts and netball courts with the option of multi-purpose use by other sports groups.
Child friendly equipment will feature in the playground that has an adventure theme. Shelters, seats, shade structures, fitness equipment, bike racks, bins, tables and seats and barbeques will also be included in the playground.
The main surface of the playing fields (couch turf) will be constructed with a “turtle back” shape to assist with drainage and a sub surface irrigation system will be installed to supply recycled water to create a high performance field. There are also significant electrical, stormwater, sewer and water infrastructure systems throughout the entire project to increase its efficiency.
Extensive landscaping will be undertaken comprising bushland revegetation, riparian planting and lawns. A variety of local shrubs, grasses, mature trees and plant species will be used to complete the landscaping component of the project to provide visual amenity.
Two ponds will be constructed and act as dual purpose water quality treatment bodies that will have aesthetic appeal. These ponds are an important addition to the sustainability agenda of improving water quality and creek restoration at The Ponds. These ponds complement those already delivered in the Parklands near Stanhope Parkway and Paddle Street. In addition, two rain gardens and one detention basin will be built to assist with water management.
Landcom has contracted Profile Landscapes Australia to undertake the construction of the multi-million dollar project.
“The company is pleased to be awarded such a diverse project which incorporates many different environmental and sports elements. There are few new jobs of this size available for tender in the North West area. This project is a significant win for the business,” said Carlo Capogreco, Director of Profile Landscapes Australia.
“More than 40 employees are expected to work on the multi-million dollar project over the coming months. Profile Landscapes Australia has won numerous industry awards over the past decade for its quality workmanship and hopes to add another trophy to its mantle piece with this sports facility.”
Completion of the sports facilities is expected prior to Christmas 2010.
The Ponds is a 320 hectare master-planned community which is being developed by Landcom and Australand. It will comprise over 3,000 homes when complete.
